What is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Women’s health physiotherapy is a specialized field of physical therapy focused on the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of conditions unique to the female anatomy. It addresses the interconnected systems of the pelvic floor, core cylinder, lumbar spine, and hips.

The pelvic floor is a sling of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues supporting the bladder, uterus, and bowel. When these muscles become weak (hypotonic) or overly tight (hypertonic), it can lead to urinary leakage, pelvic organ prolapse, chronic pelvic pain, or pain with intimacy. Women’s health physiotherapy provides targeted internal and external muscle rehabilitation to restore optimal muscle tone, coordination, and strength.

At Highland Physio & Rehab, our approach is empowering and educational. We take the time to understand your symptoms, explain your anatomy clearly, and create a personalized rehabilitation plan tailored to your lifestyle, fitness goals, and stage of life.

Commonly Asked Questions & Answers

Have a question or curious to know what to expect? We have your questions answered!

An internal pelvic assessment involves a gentle, gloved digital examination of the pelvic floor muscles through the vagina (or rectum if indicated) to assess muscle tone, strength, endurance, and tenderness. While an internal assessment provides the most accurate clinical diagnostic information, it is never mandatory. You have complete control, and we can perform external assessments and treatments if you prefer.

While urinary leakage is common after childbirth, it is not normal and you do not have to live with it. Leaking with coughing, sneezing, or exercise is a sign of pelvic floor dysfunction that can be successfully treated with specialized pelvic floor physiotherapy, whether you gave birth six weeks ago or twenty years ago.

Yes, you can still attend your appointment while on your period. If you are comfortable, we can proceed with an internal assessment or treatment, or we can focus your session on external lumbopelvic manual therapy, breathing techniques, and core exercises.

No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to book an appointment with our women’s health physiotherapists. However, some private extended health insurance policies require a physician’s note for reimbursement. We recommend checking your insurance benefits.

Yes, women’s health physiotherapy is covered under standard extended health insurance plans that include physiotherapy benefits. It is billed as regular physiotherapy. Highland Physio & Rehab offers direct billing with most major Canadian health insurance providers.
